Synced. Supported. Succeeded. At DevCon Mindanao 2009

“Come for FREE and let’s have Pizza and Beer!”

In all honesty, this was the line that got me in a cinch.

But DevCon, short for “Developers Connect” was more than that. Last December 3, 2009, DevCon gathered some good number of IT students, developers, technopreneurs and professionals, myself included, from all the different parts of Mindanao to converge under one event to interact with one another and to learn together about some of the best and the latest in the web and software industry.

This event, made possible with the cooperation of ICT Davao and the Philippine Software Industries Association (PSIA), was also a part of the Davao Innovation Month, which was also an initiative of ICT Davao and PSIA, alongside Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), Davao Software Industry Incorporated (DSII); and sponsored by Oracle, Global Gateway Innovation Exchange (G2iX), Globe and SM City Davao.

The event was hosted by G2iX CEO Winston Damarillo and PSIA Marketing Program Director Dianne Suico. Winston Damarillo started off the program with a little introduction about IT Professionals in the context of world demand. He also explained about the main parts of the event which will transpire that evening.

The 3 main parts were the Lightning Talks, rather quick, lightning-speed types of presentations to be introduced to the audience by some chosen speakers; Birds of a Feather, a spontaneous debate amongst groups on opposing perspectives regarding a single given topic; and Hackathon, a joint coding onsite competition using only the speedy learning of a new programming language.

The “Lightning Talks” was comprised of the following presentations:

*Web Automation Testing using Selenium by Aaron Tinio

*Functionalities and features of, a new unique web application for Twitter, by Eric Clark Su

*”Open Sauce”,  a good, simple and funny analogy presentation to Open Source (as compared to “MicroSauce”) by Deng Ching

*The New Google Technologies and Open Source by Aileen Apolo (You can join Google’s Technology Users Group at

*Cloud Computing by Jerome Gotangco

*Functions and Features of by Stephanie Caragos

*Functions and Features of SignApp Now by Milo Felipe

(If I missed a presentation, please let me know.)

After the presentations, the slices of pizza and cups of beer were finally served. Aaah yes…

Back to the program, a memorandum of agreement regarding the continuing development of DevCon was being signed between PSITE President Dr. Randy Gamboa and Ms. Dianne Suico at this point.

Next, the “Birds of a Feather” discussion. The topic was the advantages among the different, popular Operating Systems “MAC vs Linux vs Windows.” The Mac users stressed more on Mac’s functionality. Linux panel pointed out the OS’s practicality . The Windows group took the ease-of-use route. The Windows panel won because of its innocent, refreshing takes on the familiar operating software.

And seriously, 85% of the audience are Window users. Since the decision for the rightful winner was to be coming from the audience…

I am a Mac user *bitter*

“Hackathon” contestants were required to create a sign up form using the Dabble DB software, with a time limit of only one hour. A college schoolmate, who is actually stupendous with programming, joined in this competition too. Wonder if their group won… I forgot to mention, the cash prize was P10,000.

Altogether, DevCon was absolutely fun and engaging while enabling to impart useful information and knowledge to all the IT participants present in the event.

Not saying the free unlimited pizza and beer were no fun either.
