“Goodbye”

The first love song ever dedicated to me has quite the tragic gist. I was Grade 4 back then. I was being courted by a guy 2 years my senior. One day, he wrote me a beautiful love letter, which I endearingly brought home with me. You probably know where this is going to lead by now. So yes, my mom caught me reading the letter in my room and had to read it for herself. Realizing the “gravity” of the situation I was about to place myself into, my mom (and dad eventually) had to tell me to not even think about starting anything with this guy and that I have to ditch him, pronto. These solicited tears from my tiny heart, of course.  I didn’t understand why we can’t go through it. But I just had to accept the fact that “it was because I was still young.”

The next day, I told the guy that we cannot go through a relationship because of my parents’ disapproval. He was saddened by this. From here on, things got more rocky and the temperament of our feelings for each other died to a lull, mostly for me. All he could  do to reach out for me one more time  was to dedicate a song for me to let me know what he wants to tell me, finally.

A mention of my name, a message, then finally, Air Supply’s “Goodbye” boomed through the school grounds whilst our annual school fair was going on.

Since everyone knew one another in my school, you guessed it, all eyes -> me.

And my mom was there too. Beside me. And heard everything.

Embarrassment was the understatement of the year.

Jest aside, that’s why when I first heard about the “What Air Supply Song Are You? Blog Contest“, I couldn’t help but pull the song “Goodbye” right out from my cerebral archive. Yes, you can totally laugh out loud the church giggles now, but this song defined my young love and how it evolved ever so gradually until this day. Now, I would rather hurt myself, than to ever make the one I love cry. Cheesy? Whatever, man. And it’s not like you’ve haven’t been there too :P

When GenSan News Online Mag mentioned about this contest, of course I had to give the chosen song a listen again after such a long time. I laughed at the thought of how silly I was back then but quite oddly, and unexpectedly, it made me teary-eyed as well. Ah, no denying it, young love it was indeed.

I really wonder how my emotions would run the moment I hear Air Supply sing this song live. The Air Supply Concert in GenSan could be a way to find out. And it would actually be a treat to hear them sing their classics live in concert; they have had such big hits during the ’80s, such as All Out of Love, The One That You Love, Making Love Out of Nothing at All and The Power of Love.

For actually making this happen, would like to thank Grab A Crab Restaurant for that. On a completely different note, the way you’ll feel after eating their scrumptious dishes, you’ll definitely have sweet dreams and have nights that will get better.
